Yein Lee is a South Korean artist who currently lives and works in Vienna. After receiving a B.F.A. in Traditional Asian Painting from Hongik University, Lee received an Magister from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Lee’s practice revolves around a system of becoming, procedural redefinition, and the structure of connectivity. Through the reuse of discarded objects as part of an installation, sculpture, painting, and performance, the assemblage format serves to capture personal experience and narrative, while also manifesting a contradictory attitude towards materials in the context of social and environmental crisis. Her works navigate the ambivalence surrounding contemporary commodity culture, the economy, and the political dynamics. As transient compositions, fluctuating roughness and fragility are at the forefront of her formal investigation. Her work has recently been presented internationally in group exhibitions at the 15th Gwangju Biennale, Centre d’Art La Meute, Château - Centre d’Art Contemporain de la Ville d’Aubenas, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris; Belvedere 21, Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna, among others.
