Biography

Born in 1987 in Berlin, Germany
Lives and works in both London and Berlin

Paul Hutchinson studied at the University of the Arts Berlin and Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London. In his photographic practice, Hutchinson explores his immediate environment, the role of technology, and contemporary Hip Hop culture. His photographs straddle the line between documentary and poetic expression. What may initially appear as a spontaneous snapshot is actually a meticulously composed photographic expression, an aesthetic that conveys inner movement through color and form. Hutchinson often works with the deliberate omission of individualizing details: subjects turn away, their faces are obscured or cropped, and in group pictures, young people blend into singular, intertwined shapes. Through these details—whether seemingly banal or deeply personal—Hutchinson vividly and uniquely characterizes a subculture. He extends the boundaries of the medium to the point where his images take on a painterly substance.

Hutchinson has received grants and awards from Deutsche Bank, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), University of the Arts Berlin, and Berlin Masters Foundation. In 2016, he was awarded the Eberhard Roters Grant for Young Art, given biennially by Stiftung Preussische Seehandlung in cooperation with Berlinische Galerie. Hutchinson’s recent exhibitions include «Doppelausstellung Saskia Groneberg & Paul Hutchinson» at Galerie Russi Klenner in Berlin, «Paul Hutchinson» at Knust x Kunz in Munich, «tanzen Alexander Romey & Paul Hutchinson» at Nina Sagt Galerie in Düsseldorf, «Wildlife Photography» at Galerie Mansart in Paris, and «nett sind die spasten alle» at 8 Quadrat in Cologne. He has participated in both solo and group exhibitions internationally.
