L’éducation de Ryan Travis Christian dans la banlieue de Chicago dans les années 1990 a offert des expériences absurdes, qu’il utilise comme carburant pour les récits personnels surréalistes de ses dessins au graphite influencés par la culture pop.

Impacté par la figuration à la Chicago, Christian se concentre sur la relation paradoxale entre les dessins animés enfantins et les messages inquiétants, méditant sur l’obsolescence technologique et matérielle de son inspiration. Les caricatures politiques d’époque et les animations dessinées à la main influencent les vignettes détaillées de Christian - notamment d’Ub Iwerks, George Condo et The Hairy Who - Christian se réconcilie avec le passé sordide de ses sources tout en embrassant leur richesse et leur saveur.

Christian superpose soigneusement et densément du graphite pour révéler des graphiques à contraste élevé et des motifs vertigineux; les figures ondulantes sont rendues au ralenti, vivant parmi des paysages brumeux et des clôtures fondantes. Il expose le style de vie désordonné de l’humanité contemporaine à travers un vaste éventail de sujets et d’images; l’économie, l’environnement, le sexe, la classe, l’espoir et le doute sont envisagés avec les drogues, les caresses lourdes, l’alcool, la violence, la dépression, la mort et l’au-delà.

Le travail récent de Christian s’est élargi pour commenter les crises nationales et mondiales actuelles: ses précédents historiques deviennent des miroirs reflétant les préoccupations communes du présent. Le texte est répandu dans le travail de Christian, provenant principalement de notes personnelles sur des conversations ou des rencontres qui sont restées assez longtemps pour rester pertinentes pour lui et suivre le calibre de sa source.
